The first duty of theologians, therefore, is to be not less but more theological, relentlessly and ruthlessly theological. Not to be continually saying: 'If we give up this or that idea, we can come to terms with natural science'. It is true that peace is attainable in that way, but it is a peace of death so far as theology is concerned. Theology must go on with its proper task, the studyof God's self-revelation in the world and history. If there is no God or no revelation, then it is time for theology to be given up; but so long as we hold that there is a God and that he does reveal himself, our task is plain and urgent.
